How to create a Published & Profitable binder

Congratulations on your decision to join Published & Profitable

My goal is to guide you through the 4 steps involved in planning, writing, promoting, and profiting from a published book.

Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Recommended supplies

In order to make the most of your investment, you might consider visiting an office supply store, like Staples, and picking up a few things. These include:

  • 3-ring binder. I recommend a 1 inch or 1 1/2-inch heavy duty binder, like one of the Avery Reference View series, with transparent cover and extra pockets. Example
  • Tabbed index dividers. While you're there, pick up a package of tabbed index dividers. Choose either the type that contains heavy paper tabs you can insert to indicate the contents of each section of your binder, or you can choose the Standard type that allows you to print or add text right on the tab itself. Example
  • 3-hole punched paper. Purchase one, or more, reams of 3-hold punched paper for printing out e-books, articles, or assessments, checklists, or worksheets. I use Staples brand e-hold Multiuse Paper, 86 Bright, 20 pound weight.

Setting-up your binder

Start by replacing the original Avery front cover insert with one of your own. You can create your own, print it, and insert it in behind the protective plastic. Create your front cover with Microsoft Word, or your favorite page layout program, and print it on a standard 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet or paper.

Or use my front cover template that you can download here.

You might also consider creating and printing an insert for the spine of your 3-ring binder, making it easier to locate your binder when you place it in a bookshelf. Click here for a template for creating a 2-inch spine.

Next, create indexed dividers for the major categories of your notebook. I suggest you create the following tabs:

  1. Write Your Way To Success
  2. Proposal Writing Handbook
  3. Step 1: Plan
  4. Step 2: Write
  5. Step 3: Promote
  6. Step 4: Profit
  7. Handouts--audios, videos
  8. Case studies
  9. Assessments
  10. Checklists
  11. Worksheets
  12. Resources

Initial steps

Start by printing out the 184-page Published & Profitable e-book and inserting it in the binder.

Next, print out the Proposal Writing Handbook, and insert it in the binder.

As you read them, jot your questions down on the print-out, as they occur to you. Then, submit your questions to the Discussion Forum.

Your questions will guide me as I prepare articles and future editions of Published & Profitable.

Handouts and note-taking sheets

Before attending a Published & Profitable webinar, or other special event, download the note-taking sheets that we provide in advance.

These will help you jot down important ideas as they occur to you during the webinar.

In addition, you may want to download the note-taking sheets before watching one of the Published & Profitable videos, or listening to a Published & Profitable audio.

The note taking sheets are saved as PDFs and can be downloaded from the same page where you can watch one of the videos or download a MP-3 file for listening to on a portable listening device.

Case studies

Get in the habit of downloading the case studies we have prepared for important business and non-fiction books.

When placing print-outs of case studies in your binder, arrange them alphabetically, by title. This will help you quickly locate them in the future.

Assessments, checklists, and worksheets

Get in the habit of printing out assessments, checklists, and worksheets as you take them, and inserting them in the proper section of your binder. This will help you review your responses in the future.

If you use an assessment, checklist, or worksheet more than once, be sure to insert the dates of each printout on the printout.
